One of the most unique and desirable aspects of Coachella is their extensive lineups that feature rare reunions as well as exciting up and coming acts.  These artists range in all genres from underground techno, to punk, to obscure indie acts. Even the most educated music enthusiasts are guaranteed to find a long list of acts they may not be familiar with. And let’s be honest, the unbearably tiny font on the lineup poster certainly doesn’t help when researching those names towards the bottom of each day. But as can be expected from Coachella talent bookers, there are some fantastic lesser known musicians playing Coachella this year. Here are some of the favorites from the Festival Snobs staff.

Ryn Weaver | New York City/Los Angeles[hr gap=””]

ryn

Ryn Weaver is San Diego-born but splits her time between LA and NYC. Acts like Charlie XCX, Hayley Williams, Jessie Ware, and Cashmere Cat all support her young but flourishing music career. Her EP, “Promises” came out August 8th, 2014. Mega producer Benny Blanco and Passion Pit front man Michael Angelakos helped produce it. You can hear Angelakos electronic/synthtastic influence throughout her EP. Live, she sounds phenomenal, if not better than on record. She’s sexy and powerful on stage and a damn pro a clawing the air as she sings her heart out. You may want to label her sound as “pop”, but her voice is soulful and wise beyond her 22 years of age, it is a beautiful combination. Being able to catch someone so early in their career play such a massive festival is a definite treat and not something you should pass up.

Sloan | Toronto, Ontario[hr gap=””]

sloan

Over the last two decades, Sloan has accumulated gold records, number-one hits, and a rabid fan base in Canada. According to Coachella, that means absolutely nothing. They’ve been relegated to the way-too-fine print at the bottom of the lineup poster, but don’t let that deter you from experiencing a hits-laden set by instrument-switching, Canadian power-pop royalty. Rock out to their power chord-bangin’, harmony-laden and instantly infectious hits and you will have completed half the criteria required to earn a Canadian citizenship.

Lights | Toronto, Ontario[hr gap=””]

lights

I’ve been to Coachella three times and when I think about the atmosphere, I can’t help to think about feel good music that you can join in and sing with your friends. Lights newest album, Little Machines, showed a maturation of her synth-pop sound, but also kept the fun loving anthems we are used to. What’s better for thousands of people to listen to at the desert in April?

Todd Terje | Oslo, Norway[hr gap=””]

todd

If you asked me what act on the Coachella 2015 lineup I’m looking forward to most, I’d yell out Todd Terje before you could even finish the question. The immensely talented Norwegian songwriter and producer has a unique sound that will tickle your eardrums and force your body into a dancing furry. His album, ‘It’s Album Time‘, debuted last year and quickly gained massive popularity among dance music enthusiasts and was featured in almost every “Best of 2014” list on the internet. His performance at Coachella in April will be a rare treat considering Todd rarely makes US appearances, let alone with his full band, and has yet to appear on any other North American festival lineups so far this year. It doesn’t matter when or where he’s scheduled on the Polo grounds, clear out any conflicts and bring your dancing shoes.

Built To Spill | Boise, Idaho[hr gap=””]

built

Built to Spill is a five-piece indie rock band from Boise Idaho. BTS has been releasing albums since 1993, with their latest album release “There Is No Enemy” in 2009. While the band has seen its fair share of members rotating in and out of the band over the years, the band continues to create catchy guitar- heavy songs, which showcase their musical talent. BTS is a personal favorite of mine with their albums “Keep It Like A Secret” and “There’s Nothing Wrong With Love” ranking among my favorite of all time. Not only does BTS create excellent studio albums, but their live performances are impressive. BTS is no stranger to the tour bus, they have played numerous festivals as well as headlined their own tours. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing BTS live four times in both small venue settings as well as music festivals and each time has been a great experience. This is one band I highly recommend checking out this year at Coachella.

Mac DeMarco | Montreal, Quebec[hr gap=””]

Mac DeMarco Cigarette Heaven

Come for the shenanigans, stay for the surprisingly-solid musicianship. Behind all the crowd-surfing, joint-smoking and generally chaotic on-stage antics of Mac DeMarco, there lies an incredibly talented songwriter with a deceptively tight band. Sure, they’ll goof around and probably play a gag cover or two, but it’s hard to think of a better setting to enjoy Mac’s layered, poppy grooves than the sunny Polo Fields. Whether you’re beached on a blanket in the back, or squeezing up front for a stage dive, this set is sure to please.

Dubfire | Mashad, Iran[hr gap=””]

dub

You may not immediately know the name Dubfire but he is quite the acclaimed electronic artist. Dubfire is half of the group, Deep Dish, who were a four time nominated and Grammy winning duo. Being in the game since 1991, he has had the opportunity to work with electronic heavyweights like Richie Hawtin and Underworld. Throughout the years his accolades have piled up. His BBC Radio 1 Essential mix is absolute FIRE (forgive the pun). Dubfire will be bringing his signature deep house style to the Yuma Tent and for any electronic music fan; this is not a set to miss.

Touché Amoré | Burbank, California[hr gap=””]

touche

Coachella is looking to inject more rock into the mix, especially with their 2015 lineup. Touche Amore is a post-harcore band from Burbank, California who always puts on a energetic set when they perform. Anybody who got to see them open for Rise Against on their 2014 tour would be able to agree. I’m not sure if the desert is ready for mosh and circle pits, but get your game faces on.

John Talabot | Barcelona, Spain[hr gap=””]

talabot

A welcomed surprise was seeing John Talabot’s name in tiny print on the Coachella 2015 lineup.  I skimmed over the poster three times before squealing in excitement at the site of his name, having missed it initially.  Best known for his dark, melodic, and emotional take on house and techno, John Talabot’s only full length album ‘ƒIN remains one of my all time favorites even after hundreds of spins. Like Todd Terje, having John Talabot on a US festival lineup is a rare treat that shouldn’t be missed, no matter the conflict.

Cloud Nothings | Cleveland, Ohio[hr gap=””]

cloudnothingstop

Cloud Nothings area three-piece indie-rock/punk rock band hailing from my hometown of Cleveland Ohio. Cloud Nothings began in a basement (literally) as a solo project by lead singer Dylan Baldi. The band released their fourth album “Here and Nowhere Else” in April of 2014 and has since been labeled “Best New Music” by Pitchfork. I have not had the opportunity to see this band live as of yet, but their live shows tend to be packed with instrumental jamming, which I can only imagine to be outstanding. This is not their first trip to Indio, Cloud Nothings played Coachella back in 2013 and will be returning this year. Check out some of their songs and don’t miss their set at Coachella!

Panda Bear | Baltimore, Maryland[hr gap=””]

panda

Noah Lennox, better known as Animal Collective founder and front man Panda Bear, just released his 5th studio solo album titled “Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper”. I was lucky enough to see his Boiler Room Set at MoMA PS1 recently where he worked along side visual artist Danny Perez to create these stunning, trippy, scary visuals to accompany his singular performance. If Panda Bear brings those same visuals with him to Coachella, you’re in for a serious trip with no drugs necessary. He has the ability to turn his performances into a visceral out of body experience. If you’ve never had the ability to see a Panda Bear show, Coachella will be the perfect opportunity to pop that cherry.

Charles Bradley | Gainesville, Florida[hr gap=””]

IMG_3725

The rise in popularity was not a quick one for 66 year old Charles Bradley. The Soul and R&B singer spent years working odd jobs while performing his James Brown inspired routine at clubs. His first album with Daptone sub-print Dunham Records debuted in 2011 to critical acclaim which Charles has been touring relentlessly ever since to support.  It will only take a few minutes of witnessing Bradley’s stage presence to become overwhelmed with love and joy. The emotion and pain projected during his live performances will have you hooked for life. I’ll never forget the warm sweaty hug I received from Charles that seemed to last forever as he made his way through the crowd during his Lollapalooza 2013 performance. Do your best to add Charles Bradley to your Coachella 2015 schedule, and you too might receive one of the best hugs you’ll ever get.

The Orwells | Elmhurt, Illinois[hr gap=””]

orwells

Punk rock band The Orwells is a five-piece band based out of Elmhurst Illinois. The band is composed of a set of twin brothers and cousins all freshly out of high school. The Orwells have released 2 studio albums: “Remember When”(2012) and “Disgraceland” (2014). A number of their songs have an infectious sound that will stick in your head, especially their latest single “Who Needs You”. Their overall sound, lyrics, and stage presence are all characteristic of being young, and not giving a fuck. I have not had the chance to see this band live but I imagine this band will put on an interesting, entertaining, and possibly destructive performance. Check out a few of their songs and be sure to catch their set at Coachella this year!

Parquet Courts | New York City, New York[hr gap=””]

parquet

NYC natives Parquet Courts had themselves quite a year releasing two albums, “Sunbathing Animal” and “Content Nausea” under the name Parkay Quarts. Garage rock? Indie Rock? Punk Rock? Grunge? A little bit of all four is how you can describe the sound of Parquet Courts. Live, they straight up just rock it. Loads of energy. If you’re looking to jump around and crowd surf this will be a great show to do so at. Parquet Courts have quite the credibility in the DIY scene so it is going to be a completely different experience to see them play outdoors to such a large crowd. Rest assured, it will be a party.

Carl Craig | Detroit, Michigan[hr gap=””]

carl craig

Carl Craig is one of the most revered producers in the Detroit techno community. Craig has been making music since the 80s and is one of the true underground legends, having influenced some of today’s biggest electronic acts. The Yuma Tent will be the perfect venue to relax and let loose in the air conditioning while witnessing some of the best techno Coachella has to offer in 2015.
