For four days each early spring, Knoxville, TN becomes the mecca of musical discovery. Big Ears Festival is in town using various venues and theatres and taking sonic exploration to a new high.
The initial batch of artists have been announced and highlights include: Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Four Tet, Jenny Hval, Bang on a Can All-Stars, Diamanda Galas, Algiers, Suuns, Lightning Bolt, Kelly Lee Owens, The Thing, Juana Molina, and Jaga Jazzist.
Fresh for this edition is the New Appalachian Homecoming. Curated by Anna Roberts-Gevalt (one half of Anna and Elizabeth) , it will feature music, square dancing, and even a fiddlers competition.
With more than 60 + artists, the festival boasts a dizzying amount of performances and collaboration sets over the weekend. Among them includes Nels Cline performing his 2016 Lovers album (with the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra), Diamanda Galás Duet for Theremin & Lap Steel, a live score from Neif-Norf and Wordless Chorus to Viktor Jakovleski’s new documentary, Brimstone & Glory, a rare Steve Gunn and Black Twig Pickers show, and many many more.
Eclecticism is the key for Big Ears 2018. There is something for everyone.
